Mitsubishi LED Lighting Plant Factory Model
At PVJapan2008, which was held on July 30, 2008, Mitsubishi Chemical exhibited a conceptual model of a plant factory that uses solar cells and LEDs in combination. The company plans to team up with FairyAngel, a vegetable cultivation venture company, to start production of plant factories using solar cells and LEDs from the end of 2009 (see the website for LED lighting systems for plant factories in Mitsubishi Chemical in 2009).
Mitsubishi Chemical is currently building a facility for technical verification of this conceptual model at Fairy Angel's Fukui Plant, which is scheduled to be completed in October 2008. Initially, 20kW class silicon solar cells will be used, and in the future, organic thin film solar cells under development by Mitsubishi Chemical will be used. When a plant factory is built in an urban area, a silicon-based solar cell with high power generation efficiency has an advantage, and in a vast land such as overseas, a low-cost and easy-to-set organic thin film solar cell has a good prospect.
Mitsubishi Chemical believes that the demand for plant factories will be expanded in the areas where it is difficult to purchase vegetables such as deserts. Therefore, we hope to actively carry out sales activities for its plant factories. The company is also considering exhibiting the plant at an energy-related exhibition in the United Arab Emirates in early 2009.
In addition, Mitsubishi Chemical's prototype of coated organic thin film solar cells will be completed in 2010, and the company plans to launch it as a commodity in 2012. In terms of module conversion efficiency, we strive to reach 7% in 2010 and 15% in 2015.
