Plantagon, a Swedish food technology company, has released a work plan for the “Plant Building” and plans to create the first such an indoor farm + work building in Linkoping, East Ottoland, Sweden. . Due to the operation of this farm together, the urban farmers who cultivated here do not need to pay any rent at all, because the heat generated by the farm is enough to pay the amount.
The Plantagon underground farm, like other indoor farms, will grow plants in the building with LED lighting. However, the difference between the Plantagon is that the heat generated by the lighting in the room is usually discharged from the room to prevent the plants from overheating, but the Plantagon collects the heat directly and stores it in the building's thermal storage system, which can help the building. People stay warm in the middle of the winter.
The underground farm collects heat by using a water pipe above the LED lamp to store the heat in the water and then to the heat pump system. This thermal energy storage system will save the building 700,000 kilowatt-hours of energy per year, which is equivalent to saving three times the basement rent. In addition, the carbon dioxide produced in the studio will be discharged to the farm and the fresh oxygen from the farm fruits and vegetables will be returned to the office workers.
"The building operators agree to let us pay the rent for three years, so we don't need to pay any one for the basement," said Hans Hassle, the founder of Plantagon. "For urban farmers, if you really want to In the cultivation of fruits and vegetables in the city, it is necessary to find novel commercial forms in order to make the food produced less expensive."
The company plans to sell fruits and vegetables directly to office workers in the same building, as well as to two restaurants on the side of the building; about one-third of the value will be sold to nearby grocery stores, and the transportation process is close to no need to consume any petroleum fuel. Other one-thirds of the value will be sold in the shops in the building.
"In Sweden, people have a higher hobby for food grown on the ground than organic food," Hassle said. "People generally want to know where food comes from."
Hassle makes up that if an organic lettuce is transported to a store from hundreds of miles or even thousands of miles away, its environmental footprint may be higher than that of lettuce grown on local indoor farms.
The Plantagon program will open 10 underground farms in Stockholm in the next three years, starting with a building with an underground heat pump system. The preparation team is also commenting with local power companies to sell the remaining heat to other buildings in the area.
In the city of Linkoping, a two-hour drive from Stockholm, the company is planning to expand the underground farm to a 16-story "plant skyscraper." In addition to the production of fruits and vegetables in the entire building, two-thirds of the space will be rented for studio use to maintain operational stability. This program is expected to be implemented in 2020 or 2021.
A similar indoor farm program for Plantagon will also be implemented in Singapore. In this country that lacks cultivated land, most of the crops are imported from nearby countries, like Malaysia, and when Malaysia and other countries can irrigate less and the population is growing, Singapore begins to be able to Plantagon urban farms that cultivate food have a hobby. Similarly, in some cities in China that are difficult to obtain food, they also began to collaborate with Plantagon.
The company is collecting funds from the crowdfunding channel FundedByMe to create the first farm. Hassle expects this program to allow as many people as possible, not only because of financial factors, but also because he trusts every citizen to actively become a shareholder of urban agriculture.
"For us, food production is different from other jobs. Food is like water and is part of human rights," Hassle said. "So we have greater social responsibilities and responsibility for the environment. This is why we actively invite people. The reason for having a partial shareholding is because everyone should be dedicated."
